5 Local Female Run Businesses to Support

5 Local Female Run Businesses to Support

This year has tough on everyone. You may have lost your job, been sick, or struggled with mental health. However, some women I know have truly excelled throughout this past year. Whether taking up a hobby during quarantine, or really focusing on their passions when given some extra time, these small business owners are all creating beautiful works of art that they would love to share with you.

So here are 5 of my badass friends who own and operate small businesses in South Western Ontario

1. Born Pretty Basic Jewellery

Born Pretty Basic was created by Erin Friedman in Toronto Ontario in 2020. Erin wanted a way to feel creative and trendy during quarantine without breaking the bank. Her interest in fashion and jewellery brought her to create her own style of jewellery that is now Born Pretty Basic Jewellery. Erin's small business does simple and trendy in the coolest way, but can also help you stand out in the crowd by  personalizing a piece just for you.

What I love about her jewellery is that it makes every look feel elevated.  It's crazy how much feeling put together can affect your mood. It's true what they say, if ya look good, ya feel good.

2. Butter Baby London

After having her first baby, Jacqueline Bodnar was on the hunt for some new baby toys and accessories. She was tired of seeing the same old gender specific toys, pink for girls and blue for boys. She wanted to create beautiful, modern, gender neutral toys that any child can enjoy. Thus, Butter Baby London was born. Butter Baby London chooses gorgeous colour palettes and mixes them with the softest, most durable local materials, for your little ones to enjoy for years to come.

Maple Learning Collection
I love the modern approach she has taken to creating these beautiful collections. Made from locally sourced Canadian Hard Maple, this learning collection is designed to teach muscle memory when learning letters as opposed to the traditional tracing a dotted line. This board turns playtime into learning and vice versa. What more could you ask for?

3. Good Enough Weaving

One of the most creative people I know is my friend Erica Gellert. What started as a hobby to keep busy during quarantine has turned into a stunning collection of hand-woven tapestries and macrame art pieces. Her eye for design is what makes Good Enough Weaving better than good enough. The mix of beautiful colours and textures shine through each unique piece. The intricacy of her designs is incredible, and her end results just keep getting better and better.

Erica is such a cool, do it yourself kind of girl and she always goes above and beyond. For example, one thing I love is that she hand-picks the pieces of wood holding each piece together. This simple touch really makes each tapestry rustic and unique.

4. Rabbit in Red Design

Created by Jessica Boyd, these one-of-a-kind designs are a perfect gift for literally any occasion. Jessica always loved drawing and the process of colouring. So, she originally started making personalized cards for family and close friends. But when one friend's birthday card led to another, her art suddenly became more popular in the community. Her attention to detail is absolutely breath-taking and the time she takes to craft each individual piece demonstrates how much pride she takes in her work.

My favourite aspect of her work are the bold colours she uses. Her drawings are rich with personality and she knows how to capture the essence of whoever she is drawing. I also love her dog Henry!

5. Rose & Maple

A few years ago, Celina Legge was searching the internet for simple pink earring studs, and she could not find what she was looking for. So, like the boss woman she is, she decided to create them herself. Four years later her one-of-a-kind earrings are anything but simple. Handmade from Polymer Clay these funky earrings are stylish, cute, and so fun!

What I love about Rose and Maple is the variety of earrings that their brand offers. You can choose from every day simple taco studs, to pastel block earrings that will definitely make a statement on a night out on the town. What's that statement you ask? "Look at my cool friggen earrings!'
